Celebrating British Food Fortnight
In our (un-bias) opinion, delicious British food and the amazing producers that ensure it reaches our tables in tip-top condition deserve to be celebrated all year round, but we’ll settle for a couple of weeks. Running from September 20th - 4th of October, British Food Fortnight is here.
A Rich History
Now running annually, the British Food Fortnight was introduced in 2001 in response to the unprecedented foot-and-mouth disease which sadly resulted in over six million cows and sheep being killed in order to halt its spread. Commemorating the quality and variety of British cuisine helped farmers sell more of their produce and raise spirits in what was a depressing traditional harvest period for the agricultural community.
Today, by highlighting British food, you are raising awareness of industry-leading livestock welfare standards, ease of delivery, and a subsequent lower carbon footprint, alongside unmatched freshness and taste. There are plenty of activities to get stuck into up and down the country as communities come together to mark this occasion.
How can I show support?
Switch up that menu and prepare the British classics you’ve been craving. Throw it back to school time and feed the whole family with a toad in the hole or an Irish stew. Or why not try some of our Eversfield Organic recipes such as an irresistibly tender Braised Beef in Guinness or a traditional British Lamb Rack? If you’re looking to satisfy that sweet tooth, indulge in a rich Jersey Cream Rice Pudding or a Victoria Sponge fit for royalty.
Get yourself to a fantastic food festival and sample a range of tasty bites from some of the very best vendors in the business. The Thame Food Festival in Oxfordshire and the Powderham Food Festival in Exeter are both well-established events to satisfy those foodie cravings. With schools organising food activities for students, NHS trusts, care homes, and universities being encouraged to create special Brit-inspired menus for residents, there are plenty of places to support the celebration.
